I love football. There was a time when no matter who was playing, I rooted for the black quarterback. Why? Because for most of my life, a fundamental tenet of racism was that black players did not have the intellect to play the position of quarterback. It was a really big thing in Black History when the first black NFL quarterback took the field.
Happily things have changed. Today the quarterbacks of both teams in the Super Bowl are black. Patrick Mahomes will lead the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts will lead the Philadelphia Eagles. I am sure it has not been easy for either of them to reach this point, but here they are, making us all proud. Not only are they amazing players operating at the top of their game, but by all accounts, they are good people beloved by their teammates, family and fans.
That is why I am sharing my quilt Strength and Grace on Super Bowl Sunday. It takes strength and grace to change the world. Today is yet another example of the truth of my long held belief.
So who will I be rooting for today? It's one of those days when I can't lose. But if I were absolutely forced to choose a team, I would choose the Kansas City Chiefs because they wear red, and I LOVE RED. 😂❤️
