Frolicking in a Field of Flowers
“Frolicking in a Field of Flowers” is the second quilt that grew out of a kaleidoscope class I took from Mary Clendeninn at the Welcome All Quilters, my neighborhood quilting group. Although I have been quilting for 25 years now, I had never made a kaleidoscope quilt before I took this class, and now I have made two. The class was a fun and beautiful experience.
Choosing the right fabric is the key to a beautiful kaleidoscope quilt. There needs to be high contrast between the two fabrics used to make the blocks with one of the fabrics having lots of movement.
Whenever I make a quilt I always imagine how it might look in red and white. So after I made the pattern from a neutral palette, I made a second quilt that features red. I love neutrals, but red is my first love.
“Frolicking in a Field of Flowers” measures 62 X 62 inches. I placed 5 kaleidoscope blocks on point. I added a pieced border and a final border of the same red print as the background fabric. After the quilt was quilted by my friend Maxine Moore on her long arm, I added small rainbow charms to the center of each block to carry out the theme of the quilt.
The fabric on the back is a gray earthen print with small green flowers. I thought it carried out the theme o9f the quilt. There is a hanging sleeve on the back and a label that documents the quilt.
I signed it on the front and added a charm that says “Do more of what makes you happy.”
I hope this quilt makes you happy.
