Recently, I spent three days at the Welcome All Quilters annual retreat. For the uninitiated quilt retreats offer quilters an opportunity to live free from real life and do nothing but quilt all day. If you are a quilter, that sounds like heaven.

Our retreat was held at a secluded hotel in Peachtree City, GA. Although we were very near to Atlanta, it felt like we were miles away.

There are usually three goals to a retreat: (1). Learn something new from a group project. (2). Make progress on a personal project. (3). Relax and make friends. Our retreat successfully met all goals.

Fusible was the watch word for our group projects. We learned to create patchwork using a fusible grid and to create cathedral windows blocks using fusible binding.

As for me, I am happy to report that I have two new quilts on my design wall. They are not far along and are as yet unnamed, but in my mind they exist! Someday they will be finished quilts that I will describe as being born at a retreat.

I also worked on my long term hand appliqué quilt named Sensuous Secret Garden. I have been working on this quilt forever!! But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally we relaxed and had fun. We visited two quilt stores (Quilt ‘N Fabric and Sew Senoia), ate at new restaurants and played enough games so that everyone knew each other by the end of the retreat.

Does your quilt guild go on retreats? If not, maybe you should start a committee.
