The final installment of the Atlanta Quilt Festival’s John Lewis trilogy closes September 7th. The exhibit entitled Getting Into MY Good Trouble — Continuing the Legacy of Congressman John Lewis features quilts that depict social justice issues that need to change. The issues are personal to the quilters.
My quilt March For Safe Schools is part of the exhibit. I always loved school, and the thought that students now must not only learn reading, writing and arithmetic but also how to survive gunfire in their classroom is abhorrent to me. The message of the quilt is that guns have no place in schools, and we must do all we can to make that a reality.
From a quilting point of view, I have come to love this quilt. It is a happy quilt, and as students head back to school for the new school year, I am deeply grateful for the happy memories I have of my early school life.
