Introducing Floating On Sunshine

Floating on Sunshine is an illusion quilt. Hopefully, the blocks look like they are tumbling in space. It is inspired by a pattern created by Karen Combs.

The trick to any illusion quilt is fabric choices in light, medium and darks. I have chosen bright colors for my blocks because I knew I wanted to use the colorful African border.

The background fabric choice is also important. I chose a dark teal background with gold specks for my background to make the colorful blocks stand out.

Floating on Sunshine measures 46 X 57 inches. I pieced it on my Janome sewing machine and then had it machine quilted by my friend Maxine Moore. I love the wavy quilt pattern in the background. I think it adds to the story of the quilt — floating.

The fabric on the back is a happy yellow with butterflies and fruit. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt. I signed it on the front and added a charm that captures the spirit of the quilt.

This quilt is one-of-a-kind. She will make her public debut at the 2023 Atlanta Quilt Festival scheduled for August 4th - September 2d at the Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road SW, South Fulton, GA 30331.
